Window wells make it possible for you to bring more light, air and life into your basement. They also provide an escape option in case of fire or other emergencies. There are a wide variety of window wells and covers in a broad range of shapes, sizes and materials for purchase by homeowners and contractors.

The Size of the Basement Window Wells
Basement window wells covers help protect the window and the well from rain and snow. Before you measure your well for a cover, note the shape of your window well. Next, measure the length of the window well on both sides (the side that connects the well to the wall and the opposite side away from the wall). Write down the larger of the two measurements. The depth measurement can be achieved by measuring from the middle of the outer edge of the well to the wall.

How to Install a Window Well
These video explain how to install a window well for your home:

Basement window wells are small structures positioned outside semi-basement windows that allow more light to enter and keep soil and water away from window. These are some steps to install the window well. Firstly, you need to take your prefabricated window well and place it against your ground-level window to get an idea of the area you need to dig out. Mark a perimeter of about 6 inches (or 15 cm) around the well with your shovel as a guide for digging. The next one is to dig the hole. The third one is to cover the bottom of the hole with 4 inches (or 10 cm) of gravel.

Then, you need to place the window well against the foundation. The next step is to mark where your bolts will go into the foundation. Then, you need to drill into the foundation at the spots marked. After that, secure the window well into the foundation with bolts. The next thing to do is to fill the bottom of the well and the perimeter between the well and the edge of your hole with a few inches (or 10 cm) of gravel. The last one is to fill any excess area around the window well with soil.
